European Commission Fines Temu €200 Million

The European Commission has fined Temu €200 million under the Digital Services Act (DSA), for failing to diligently assess the systemic risks posed by illegal products sold on its platform.

According to the Commission, Temu’s 2024 risk assessment fell short in three ways:

– It relied on general sector data rather than its own

– It underestimated the risk of illegal products (tests revealed serious safety issues with chargers and baby toys)

– It overlooked the amplifying effect of recommender systems and influencer programmes

Temu must submit a compliance action plan by 28 August 2026.
